About this site

I've started this site out of a long-time interest in and admiration of the writings of Charles Bukowski. Personally, I have been collecting Bukowski books for over 20 years. The website is still in its infancy, but I do plan to actively develop and maintain it. I will gradually be adding more scans and more bibliographic information about the books. Please check back in from time to time.

The initial focus of this site was collectible variations of all of Bukowski's "A" items, sort of a visual companion to Aaron Krumhansl's excellent Descriptive Biliography of the Primary Publications of Charles Bukowski upon which I've relied for much of the information on this site. Mainly thanks to contributors, it has since expanded dramatically and is now open to Non-US first editions as well as any periodicals to which Bukowski contributed. The site also includes other items (ephemera and key publications) that are not in Krumhansl's biblio because they don't fit the criteria of a "primary" publication, as well as books and broadsides that have been published since the publication of that book. I do not plan to add lists of contents or elaborate descriptions of the publications. If you want that you will need to buy youself a copy of the Krumhansl biliography (I'd suggest this if you're serious about collecting Bukowski anyway). I will, however, list which poems or stories appeared in periodicals when that info is available to me. If you are looking for a specific poem, you might try bukowski.net, where mjp has a comprehensive database of the published poems and where they have appeared.

My aim is to make this site as comprehensive as possible. Quality scans of missing items or pertinent information relating to the publications is welcome. Suggestions toward making the site more user friendly are also welcome, but I don't plan to entirely re-design it anytime soon.

That said... welcome and enjoy your visit.

Copyright Issues

This website is a personal, not-for-profit project. There are no advertisments and nobody is giving me any money to do this. Some of the scans and photographs of book covers and other items are from my personal collection, some have been sent to me by contributors, and others have been borrowed from various places on the web. I believe that the use of these images falls under the fair-use statutes of the United States. In some instances photography may have been used that I do not yet have specific permission to use. In these cases I am (or will be) attempting to contact the copyright holder for permission to use them. I do not claim copyright to anything on this website. If you see anything on this site which you feel infringes on your copyright, please let me know and it will be removed.

Submissions

Scans of missing covers or improved scans of covers already posted here are very much appreciated. Please email admin@collectingbukowski.com with info on what you would like to send before sending actual scans. I will not be posting scans of trade paperbacks (when a hardcover trade first exists) or of later printings (no 32nd printings of Post Office for example) unless there is something special or unusual about that particular title. Scans should be 300 DPI full-size uncompressed jpegs. The book should be positioned on the scanner as straight as possible. After I receive the file(s), I will do any additional image manipulation needed to make the scan fit the format of the site. All I can offer in return is a credit for the scan and the satisfaction of knowing that you have contributed to making collectingbukowski.com a better experience for those who visit.

There is a partial list of needed scans here. If you have something of interest to add that is not on the list, please contact me about it.

I will also consider posting original articles on the subject of collecting Bukowski (personal collecting histories, great deals that you've found, ones that got away... would all be acceptable topics). Send me a draft to read and I'll let you know if I think that it will work within the context of the website. Again, I have nothing to offer in return other than a credit and a thank you.
